When most people think of cleaning solutions, it seems the prevalent themes are floors, sinks and showers. However, I‚d like to add to that list the option of having a spray cleaner that could be used on countertops, walls, and even potentially as fast air clarifiers.

The simplest spray cleaner begins with vinegar and water to which you add essential oil. The basic recipe is 2 cups of water to 8 drops essential oil (one or a combination) and two tablespoons of vinegar. If you’re looking specifically for a disinfectant quality, use cinnamon, pine, and frankincense as the essential oil component here. For a bottle, I just go to the nearest large pharmacy and look in makeup, hair care, or sometimes automotive to find a good spray bottle for under two dollars each.

Let’s look at some more specific solutions (pun intended). For your floors, you can take any preferred liquid soap (or maybe one you make yourself‚ 1/3 cup) and add vinegar (1/4 cup), lemon juice (1/4 cup), and an aromatic tea (1 cup). For antibacterial action, look at peppermint oil.

This fragrance also seems to deter some insects! If you make more than you need its best to refrigerate this and discard any time it turns cloudy.

Some of the very best essential oils can be purchased at any health food store, or on the net at Natures Gift.

Bear in mind that learning the art of natural home cleaning and care ties to a passion for ecology and wanting the best options for your home, family and schedule.

There are times when we all grab the commercial product, so don’t feel guilty‚ real life means making compromises from time to time. However, if you put making natural products into your weekly schedule like a vitamin, you’ll have less need for the commercial product.

With that caveat aside, you can make a nice all-purpose cleanser out of vinegar, lemon juice, and essential oil. Start with one cup each of vinegar and lemon. To this add 30 drops of essential oil and at least 40 ounces of water. Keep this in a large container from which you can make smaller, manageable spray bottles for various rooms in the house. Personally I like citrus oils for that fresh clean aroma, pine, and sometimes a blend.

As an aside, if you have a delicate surface but need something with better scrubbing powder, mix some liquid soap or your all purpose cleaner with a bit of baking soda. It does a great job removing stains without scratching.
