The traditional cake for much of the Southern United States is a Yule Log, named for the log that is decorated and burnt on Christmas Eve, or in Pagan traditions, the log that was burnt the night of the Solstice.

This delicious chocolate creation will help you to ring in the solstice or holiday season and is perfect for a night in front of the fire with a cup of hot coffee or cocoa.

Usually this will be consumed as soon as it is seen, however, if it isn’t eaten in the first day, store it in the refrigerator because of the perishable cream filling.


3 large eggs

1/2 c granulated sugar

5 ounces semi sweet chocolate, melted

1/3 cup of water

1 tsp pure vanilla extract

3/4 cup flour

1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp soda

2 cups whipped cream

3/4 cups mini marshmallows

1 1/2 cups confectioners sugar

1 ounce unsweetened chocolate, melted

1/4 cups light cream

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees, or in England, Gas mark 4.

Line a 15×10 inch cookie sheet or jelly roll pan with foil, extending it over the edges, then lightly grease and flour it.

Beat the egg yolks and sugar until light, beat in semisweet chocolate and water and vanilla.. mix well and stir in flour and baking powder and soda

Beat egg whites til stiff peaks form and fold gently into chocolate mixture, spread into the prepared pan.

Bake until pick inserted in center comes out clean, about 9 minutes.

Loosen the sides of the cake from foil, and invert onto a dish towel, dusting it( the towel) lightly with some unsweetened cocoa powder.

Peel off the foil and starting at short end, roll it up jelly roll fashion wtih towel inside and permit it to cool this way.

In the meantime, stirl together the mini marshmallows and the whipped cream Unroll the cake and remove towel.

spread the whipped creme mixture into the cake and reroll it.

Place confectioners sugar in medium bowl and stir in melted unsweetened chocolate.

Gradually stir in the light cream until the frosting is smooth.

Frost the entire top and sides of the rolled cake

Garnish with either pecans, or with marashino cherries and chocolate curls.

Peel off the foil,
