This was a favorite dish of mine growing up. My mother used to make this often and it is easy to make, tastes great and doesn’t cost much. This is a definite plus when watching your money and making the most of a tight budget. An added benefit is that it is easy to clean up after. The ingredients are as follows:

1 pound hamburger
1 or 2 Tablespoon onion flakes or ½ small onions chopped fine
1 teaspoon garlic salt and pepper
1 to 2 Cups uncooked macaroni; elbow works great
1 or 2 cans of tomato sauce, 8oz. size

In a large skillet, brown the hamburger meat and chopped onion, turn on low heat and add the garlic, pepper and any other seasonings. Drain off excess grease or water if needed. Add the cans of tomato sauce stir but do not let it boil. Stir occasionally to keep from sticking.

While the meat is heating, fill a medium saucepan with 5 cups water, heat to boiling. When it is at a rolling boil, add the uncooked macaroni and turn down to medium heat. Stir it and let it cook until done.

When macaroni is done, drain it and add it to the meat mixture, let sit for at least five minutes to cook together before serving. This enhances the flavors and gives you time to set the table before calling the family to eat.

Serving suggestion: This dish is good when the weather is cold. Serve with a cooked green vegetable like green beans or broccoli; sliced carrot sticks or celery; fruit; French bread and milk.

Interesting variations: Add some grated cheese and sour cream on top; spaghetti sauce works well as does a little bit of salsa added for a zesty taste. Italian seasoning or paprika add interesting flavor also.
