People should make contracts with themselves for 1 hour, 2-3 hours, half a day, 1 full day..one week, etc..when trying to quit smoking. And the MOST important of all is to redirect the old habit. In my case, after 10 years of smoking, it's my 3rd day when i'm smoke-free. And a very special person bares the "guilt" for that..by suggesting it to me, without asking, and being the reason to do it..so, if not for you..do it for the ones who you care about...

I know these comments was a year ago....just like to say that i hope you managed to quit...I have gave up smoking..in the past i tried gum, patches, zyaban, champix,i paid £80 a few yr ago to be hypmotised,i attended smoking groups.....i didnt want to give up as i enjoyed smoking......i got to the point that i couldnt walk too far,i couldnt breath and still i needed nicotine....i refused to tell myself how many years i smoked..5 weeks ago i went back to the smoking clinic ,got patches and gum and decided thats it..got my willpower and stopped...i have been a smoker since age 13 and i am now 53..It feels like it has been the biggest decision of my life..i abandoned the patches and gum after a week and told myself i cant do this filthy addiction, this addiction that i enjoyed so much, this addiction that was killing me slowly, this addiction that was rammed down my throat on tv ads how cool it was...i could go on...only after 5 weeks i feel i have more energy,i can get up the stairs,i can even carry a bag of shopping back home and its uphill.....i wish i had the answer for you to quit but all i can say is i loved cigs and bacca,i loved a roll up...i felt very deppressed after a few days..like nothings worth doing and felt so unhappy and emotional.i feel a little angry and agitated.40 years of being a smoker and i am determined i am NEVER going there again..i also know that the addiction and habbit will always be there...wish i had the answer...all i can say is find the willpower and dont give in...also wouldnt advice to do a cold turky...just happened with me for some unknown reason...and i still have to go to my pop in nhs smoking group...dont give up giving up...good luck...hmmm i can breath now...

www.whyquit.com gave me the info to finally achieve my goal of quitting after 18 years of smoking and about 25 failed attemts. You have to take control. Remind yourself that you want to be a non smoker more than you want to be a smoker. Dont let your addiction lie to you. You deserve better. God bless.

I can't believe that even though I know what smoking can do to a person, I still smoke... Shame on me!

The following tips to reduce from smoking will help you succeed.

1 . No more social smoking.

2 . Substitute other activities for smoking.

3 . Cut down the number of cigarettes you smoke. Smoke only half of each cigarette.

4 . Don't think of NEVER smoking again. Practice going without cigarettes.

5 . Avoid places and situations where you normally smoke.

6 . Exercise. It will take your mind off smoking, make you feel better, and keep you healthy.

7 . Buy lots of carrots, celery and other healthy foods so you can munch instead of smoke.

8 . Don't drink alcohol. Alcohol will likely lower your willpower and increase your chances of having a cigarette.

I heard that Ashton Kutcher used a book (I saw him on a late night talk show). I then found the book on Amazon (I bought the audio format and listened in the car at on my mp3 player at work). It was "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking". Fantastic: http://www.amazon.com/Easy-Way-Stop-Smoking-Non-Smokers/dp/1402718616/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1246797448&sr=8-1

How I quit smoking. I was driving one morning and started to feel some serious chest pain that couldn't be anything but a heart attack. I changed course and headed for the hospital and reached for a pack of cigarettes for a smoke. At that moment I realized the stupidity of what I was doing and threw the cigarettes out the window. Obviously, I survived. I haven't had a cigarette since.

It took several serious attempts before I quit 18 years ago. Smartest thing I ever did! I recommend taking a class offered by the American Lung Association. They provide education, encouragement and lots of tips to help. Each class member has a buddy to stay in touch with daily. You don't quit at the first class so you are prepared when you do. Try to quit on a day when there is the least stress in your life. I chose to quit in the afternoon; it seemed too difficult to wake up and not being able to smoke. Stay busy.Go places where you smoking is prohibited like the movies, library etc. Don't be in the company of those who are smoking. Think in terms of not smoking this hour, or this day at first. It's powerful to know you have control over your life. Good luck. If at first you don't succeed, forgive yourself. Then keep trying until you do succeed.
