My Turtle has stopped eating and is shedding. I can't seem to get his tank warm enough. It has been over a week since he last ate. I cleaned his tank yesterday. Still nothing. He is a red eared slider that is under a year old. Will he still hibernate as a indoor turtle? Is all of this normal? The bulb I have in his lamp is a 70. Is that ok? What can I do to make him happier? Please help.

for anyone whos turtle does not eat... or has stopped eating...

**HATCHLINGS... if you have just brought home your little guy hes still adjusting to his new home and is stressed from being taken from his environment.. give it a week or so.. but keep offering food throughout this time.
ALSO... if your hatchling still has his/her eggtooth, they will not eat during this time, they are still living off of the yolksacs nutrients from before they were born (eggtooth is small white raised bump just under nose)

**IF IT IS AROUND LATE FALL/WINTER MONTHS
your turtle is most likely hibernating! this can last for up to a few months. mine normally stops for 2 to 3 months. they are still awake and walk around (just not as much) and they simply do not eat. id try and offer food at least once a week if you are sure they are hibernating and remove any food they do not eat until they resume eating after hibernation ends.

Hey Thr!

I got a pair of RES Babies, though they seem healthy but one of them is lil slow and inactive while other one is very active. The active one keeps roaming entire day in the tank while the slow one mostly sits on the basking platform. Again the active guy eats happily--food offered to him -- turtle pallates, boiled chicken, boiled carrots and a bit of fish food as well (I ahve seen him enjoying the fish pallets). But the slow baby doesnt seem to be intetrested in eating, she barely eats a few pallets and thats all! Doesnt even eat chicken :( wot should I do ?

Natalie, it is nice to have someone on here offering some really good specific advice. We have a baby slider turtle that my husband decided to buy my 5-yr-old daughter before he realized just how much work is involved to care for it. We are animal lovers, so I plan to take good care of "Rocky." It sounds like your turtles (3) are the same size as ours. We keep our slider in a 10-gallon glass tank outside. Ok, don't panic! We do NOT keep him in direct sunlight....that would cook him to death. We keep him under our back patio and from the angle our house faces, the tank never gets direct sunlight. It does however get warm depending on how hot it gets outside. My concern is that we live in Alabama and some days it can get up to 100 degrees outside, which affects the tank water temp, but it can also get very cold some nights after raining (around 60 degrees or below). We do NOT have a heating lamp or a water heater. I know we need to get the heat lamp so he can bask underneath it when he gets out of the water onto his floating dock, but do you think we need the water heater too? Does it regulate according to changes in the temperature so that it won't go over the 80 degree mark (does it cool the water to keep it below 80?) or would we have to constantly turn it on/off in order to keep it regulated? For now (it got down to 50 degrees last night due to the tornadoes and rain that came through) I brought him inside and set him up in a temporary tiny plastic tank until it warms back up outside. Then I will put him back outside in the tank. I would appreciate any feedback.

Maria if your turtle is like caught under a rock or something it could possibley drown but a turtle is almost a complete water animal so it probly won't drown i also have a turtle thats about 2.5 inches long and she is in about 9 inches of water and she dosent drown (but you need a turtle dock or they couldn't get out of the water to bask and take a deep breath )
