Make your own quilt top picnic basket.
You can take a small or medium sized basket and add a lid yourself, and then put in all the accompanying items that are necessary for a picnic lunch.
This is something that every home can use, it will make a wonderful gift for the outdoors person in your life, a great Christmas gift or a wedding present.
To begin with, you’re going to add the lid to the basket and then fill it with your items.
Materials You Will Need
- One basket, size and shape you want; the basket will need a flat edge with at least a quarter inch thickness. Willow or oak will be the sturdiest type
- A wood chest type basket one whose handle will move to the side to permit the to open
- 1/2 inch thick quilt batting
- 1/2 yard 1/2 yard print fabric of your choice or one scenic fabric panel two small brass hinges
- 1/4 inch thick piece of plywood, cut to fit your basket
- 4 metal cups
- 4 plastic plates
- Corkscrew
- Small metal salt and pepper shaker.
- Knife votive candles
- Packet of moist towelettes
- Inexpensive silverware set.
Tools and Equipment Needed
- Jig saw
- Staple gun and staples
- Small screwdrivers
Instructions to Make Your Picnic Basket

- Cover the basket lid by laying the quilt batting on the top of the plywood and cut to fit your basket.
- Cover it with the fabric of your choice and wrap it around the board, so that about a 1/4 inch will be showing on the underside of the board, and tuck under the raw edges.
- Staple, or use upholstery tacks to secure it about every two inches.
- Attach the hinges to the inside of the basket top and to the inside of the basket itself, using the smaller screwdriver.
- Inside, add your picnic supplies and voila.
